Season 1 serves as an introduction to the "Old Gods." The story follows , a man released from prison early due to his wife's tragic death. On his way home, he meets the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday , who hires Shadow as a bodyguard. Shadow is thrust into a hidden conflict between the Old Gods (Odin, Anansi, Bilquis) and the New Gods (Technical Boy, Media), led by the charismatic Mr. World.
