One of the biggest surprises in Beyond Skyline is the inclusion of Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian (stars of The Raid films). When the setting shifts to Laos, the movie transforms from a standard sci-fi shooter into a showcase of incredible silat martial arts choreography. Watching alien mechs get taken down with knives and fists provides a level of visceral entertainment that most Hollywood blockbusters miss.
The plot is deceptively simple but highly effective. Detective Mark Corley (played by the always-reliable Frank Grillo) steps into a subway station to bail out his son, Trent. Suddenly, the world goes dark. Mysterious blue lights descend from the sky, and people begin to levitate, sucked into massive alien ships. What follows is a desperate mission for a father to save his son from the extraterrestrial invaders.
