On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that struck the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, causing a series of equipment failures and radioactive material releases. The incident was rated as a Level 7 (the highest level) on the International Nuclear Event Scale, and it was the largest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
